Colin Gray was a punk/goth teenager who attended Devil’s Kettle High among Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, Chip Dove, and Jennifer Check. His parents were Mr. Gray (unnamed), and Jill Gray. While Colin’s parents were Catholics, it’s unknown of his own personal stance on religion; the rosary he kept with him being more of a fashion statement than anything. Colin dressed alternatively, his style consisting of what appears to be some variation of punk and goth, his wardrobe being decked out in Hot Topic attire and his black painted nails. This also complimented his taste in music, Colin being described by Jennifer as listening to “maggot rock.” He appeared to hang around a reoccurring group of other goth teens in his grade, his friend group consisting of two goth girls named Madison and Chloe, and a goth boy named Kevin. His female friend Chloe appeared to take a romantic interest in Colin according to a deleted/removed scene from certain cuts of the film where she breaks down at Colin’s funeral to his parents, describing Jennifer Check as nothing more than a typical mean girl stereotype who didn’t deserve him. Her main source of anger over Jennifer, aside from her being one of the preps, was the fact she had a date with Colin prior to his death. In another cut scene, Chloe goes on to describe feeling as if her “heart, soul, and everything she once believed in” were crushed after Colin’s death, while she popped balloons at the dance as she and her other two goth friends followed alongside her. Kevin, his male friend, has a similar breakdown scene to Chloe’s at Colin’s funeral, sobbing as he stated that he should have been the one in Colin’s place. Needy Lesnicki was another arguable “love interest” of Colin’s aside from Jennifer Check, the two shared a creative nonfiction writing class together. On a similar note, Colin and Jennifer, his main love interest, shared an English class together. After Colin’s death, a reoccurring reference to the state his body was left in was mentioned, describing him as looking like “lasagna with teeth” as his mother described it after having to identify his remains. Chip’s mother would go forward to reference this to Chip as a means of warning him about the deaths in Devil’s Kettle that were seemingly targeted towards teenage boys among his high school.

Appearance and Manner[]

Colin was somewhat socially awkward, or at least could come across as such given his mannerisms (fiddling with his rosary he kept on hand, fidgeting with the straps of his backpack, etc). His gestures were sincere overall despite this, i.e. his interaction with Needy when he expressed his worry for her after the fire and his “being glad she didn’t die”, although an awkward attempt at expressing such. He seemed to be an all around genuine person regardless, Jennifer asking him for his homework “again” inferring this isn’t the first time he’d given her the answers to an assignment the two had in their shared English class, trying to be of help to her in some way because he admired her. Colin didn’t seem too concerned with cliques or the “status” of others, or even really just “who” someone was at Devil’s Kettle High, he took an interest in anyone he deemed interesting. This appears somewhat telling of the way he approaches Jennifer, asking her out and fumbling for words as he does so, while the previous scene of Jennifer walking out of the classroom notes how “her hair is dull and lifeless” and her skin is breaking out, or how she now feels like “one of the normal girls”, all things Colin seemingly didn’t seem to care about in that instance, but rather admired Jennifer for who she was in general. On another note, it’s also notable to point out Chip’s assumption of Colin “only hanging around the dead girls” as opposed to someone like Needy (who describes herself as a dork), whom he wouldn’t have expected someone like Colin Gray, a goth, to be associated with, giving the impression he truly didn’t associate others with their school given “titles” or categories. Colin also appeared to be self aware in the sense that once Jennifer acted as if she were merely “playing stupid” with him, or simply just not seeming interested in his attempt to ask her out, he gave up and realized that he must have been going nowhere with his proposition.
